Lip Balm - For chapped or dry lips

Lip balm is a wax-like substance applied topically to the lips of the mouth to relieve chapped or dry lips. The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure. Occlusive materials like waxes and petroleum jelly prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort while flavorants, colorants, sunscreens, and various medicaments can provide additional, specific benefits. Lip balm can be applied where a finger is used to apply it to the lips, or in a lipstick-style tube from which it can be applied directly.  This product is different from lip gloss and lipstick, both of which usually serve only a cosmetic purpose. Lip balm, in addition to adding a sheen to the lips, also aims to fight chapping and to protect the sensitive skin of the lips from sunburn.

Lip balm is a substance put on the lips to give relief to dry, or chapped, lips. It may also be used to help soothe certain other situations, such as cold sores. The balm may be made with any number of ingredients, but usually includes something like petroleum jelly or beeswax, as well as scented oils, and sometimes medicinal herbs or medicinal compounds. It can also have things like vitamins and minerals included, in theory to help support the health of the lips, and many types include sunscreen to help prevent sun damage to the sensitive skin on the lips. Lip balms come in different formulation and varieties with others containing flavour, dyes, fragrance, menthol, sunscreens and such.

The sun, wind, cold weather and heat can all cause the lips to become chapped or burnt. Licking the lips, breathing through the mouth, and even illness may also contribute to the problem. All of these things cause the lips to become dehydrated, which leads to chapped lips. If the condition gets bad enough, lips can crack, peel or bleed, and this could cause an infection.

Unlike many other areas of the epidermis, the lips have no oil glands in them, and so they do not naturally produce oils to keep the skin moisturized. At the same time, the layer of skin on the lips is extremely thin, and prone to all sorts of damage. Before turning to lip balm, there are a number of passive steps that can be taken to try to reduce dryness, chapped lips, and damage. If these steps fail to take care of the problem, however, lip products can be a good solution.

Covering the mouth with a scarf when going outside during cold weather, putting sunscreen on the lips and avoiding licking them are some ways to prevent them from getting chapped. Drinking more liquids to remain hydrated is also helpful. However, they may still become dry and burnt in spite of these precautions.

Lip balms are used to provide moisture by locking it in the external layer of the lips to help protect it from drying due to cold temperatures and external exposure. It consists of occlusive materials such as petroleum jelly and wax; known ingredients that are proven to be effective in moisture retention.

When lips become chapped or cracked, balms are an effective way to help repair them. Most balms contain many of the same ingredients. Some include beeswax or a similar substance which coats the lips and seals in moisture. Other balms contain ingredients such as lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, tea tree oil, glycerin, or shea butter which helps them stay moisturized. Sunscreen is often found in balms because exposure to the sun can cause chapped lips.

Some balms that are good for burnt, cracked or bleeding lips contain menthol, camphor or phenol which helps soothe pain. These types of products include Neosporin Lip Treatment, ChapStick Medicated Lip Balm and Blistex Medicated Lip Balm.

While many of the balms contain similar products, some have been rated more highly than others by users. Carmex is consistently reported by consumers to be some of the best non-medicated balms available for chapped lips.

Benefits Of Using Lip Balm

1. Your skin heals faster: The skin on your lips is thinner than your facial skin. So in case you are suffering from chapped and dry lips, using a lip balm will ensure that your lips are well hydrated and they heal faster.

2. You avoid the embarrassment of chapped lips: If you've ever experienced chapped, peeling and cracked lips, you will know exactly how embarrassing it is. During the winters, this thin layer is easily licked off. In combination with cold and windy weather, this often leads to chapped and dry lips. Thus it is mandatory to wear a lip balm.

3. They'll appear suppler
: Thin and dry lips turn plump and moisturised with a sweep of balm giving your lips the perfect movie star pout! There are plenty of lip glosses that claim to plump your lips, but moisturising them every day is a great way to ensure that you maintain a youthful, supple look.

4. Contains SPF protection too: Most of the lip balms these days, have SPF in them. This will automatically help your lips from becoming dry and chapped and will protect against the harmful rays of the sun as well.

Lip balm is a special treatment designed to add moisture to the lips and improve their condition. Lips can become dry easily, particularly in cold weather. A lip balm soothes and hydrates the lips. Some lip balm ingredients also help protect the lips from developing further damage.

Lip Care Products

Petroleum jelly -
It is found in almost every lip balm available. It sometimes appears on lip balm ingredients lists as petrolatum. It is widely used in balms in conjunction with hydrating ingredients to help seal in moisture and form a protective barrier.

Cocoa butter - It is one of the most popular lip balm ingredients thanks to its creamy texture and superior moisturizing abilities. It is also inexpensive and non-irritating. Cocoa butter not only provides hydration, but also forms a seal to help the lips retain moisture. It leaves lips feeling soft and smooth

Beeswax - Many natural lip balms use beeswax for this purpose instead of petrolatum. Beeswax is a natural emulsifier that keeps moisture inside the lips and is unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Due to the healing components of beeswax, it has become a staple ingredient of many make-ups and cosmetic products. These include not only lip balms, but also cold creams, lotions, cleansing creams, nail creams, depilatories, eye and face make-up and the likes. Beeswax is also considered non-comodogenic; therefore, if used properly, you can be sure that use of this product won't clog your skin pores and result to pimples or acne. It's got a zero irritation potential and is non allergenic. However, use of products made up of beeswax is contraindicated to people with oily skin. Also, people who are allergic to bees should refrain from using lip balms with bees wax as ingredients to avoid any possible interaction.
