Let Your Natural Beauty Shine With Lip Liner
Lip liner is a cosmetic product used to outline and define the lips. Available from dozens of brands and in a rainbow of colors, lip liner can be applied to create subtle enhancement or make a bold statement. Makeup experts are split on the proper use of lip liner; like many cosmetic products, its popularity waxes and wanes in accordance with current fashions. Lip liners come in varied forms, mostly pencil, but the size of the pencils and the creaminess varies from brand to brand. It's ultimately a question of personal choice. In any case, there is one inalienable truth when it comes to lip liners: They are useless unless they are sharpened. Most lip liners resemble a pen or pencil in design. Pencil lip liners typically need periodic sharpening to retain correct shape and enable easy applications. Liquid or pen-like liners sometimes include a mechanism to push more liner up through the applicator as needed. It is also possible to have permanent lip liner through the use of tattoos and permanent makeup application. All lip-liner pencils are not created equal. If, as you draw the pencil across your lips, your lip goes with it, the formula is far too dry. The pencil should glide smoothly across the lip surface, leaving a fairly strong pigment.
Lip liner is often used in conjunction with lipstick or lip gloss, to create a fuller, more filled-in appearance. Because the skin texture around the edge of the mouth can be somewhat uneven, lipstick can sometimes be difficult to apply evenly. Some people may also use liner out of a desire to create more definition around the edge of the mouth, or even to create an altered lip shape.
According to some makeup experts, lip liner should be matched with lipstick and should not be more than one shade darker or lighter. Typically, the product is used before applying lipstick or gloss, to give a defined outline for these secondary products. To make lips appear larger, color can be drawn on just outside of the natural line of the mouth. A smaller mouth can be achieved by drawing lip liner just inside the natural edge of lips. Lipstick is then applied inside the defined area for a completed look.
Choose the Best Lip Liner Color?
As lip liner is literally the foundation for lipstick, it should be chosen carefully. Though many women simply buy a lip liner color they’ve seen advertised in a magazine, not every lip liner looks good on everyone. As many varieties of lipstick there are, there are just as many lip liners. When choosing yours, pick a lip liner color that easily blends in with your lipstick. When applied correctly, lip liner can help define lips while preventing lip color from disappearing throughout the day.
Before you choose a lip liner color, take your lipstick shade into consideration. Experts suggest shopping for lip color sans makeup. A lipstick that looks great next to your skin in its most natural element is sure to make your lips look even better when you are wearing makeup. If you can’t decide, a neutral color can work for anyone.
Lip liner color comes in a variety of materials, including standard pencil, lip smudge, lip paint, and permanent lip liner. Most women choose standard lip liner pencil one that has been well sharpened as it draws the most precise lip lines. If you’re looking for an all-over color to set all night long, lining first with a pencil, filling in second with a lip smudge, and topping with lipstick and gloss is a common routine. Regardless of what color lipstick you choose, lip liner should typically be one to two shades darker than your lipstick.
Even if you have small, tight lips, lip liner can help enhance them. Many thin-lipped women fear lip liner because they think it will make their lips look darker, thus shrinking them even more. The right lip liner color, though, can help do just the opposite. If you have thin lips, choose a lip pencil color just one shade darker than your lipstick color. Additionally, using a shiny or slightly sparkly top coat can emphasize lip fullness.
Deciding whether you have fair, medium, or dark skin always helps, too. If your skin is fair with pinkish undertones, pick a shade anywhere between nude, coral, and apricot pink. For skin that’s a bit warmer or tanner, mauves, blushes, and rose lip liner colors should work well. For dark or black skin, brown or purple lip liner shades are best, while splashes of wine colors at night can really brighten things up.
When applying lip liner color, use the pencil to line your lips. When drawing the line, gently brush the pencil in sweeping strokes. This will create a more natural line. While doing this, be sure to hug the outer edges of the lips, in order to emphasize their shape. The more defined an edge, the more dramatic the look. While perfection isn't a necessity, any dark smudges may show through your lipstick top coat.
Applying The Lip Liner
Applying the liner in one solid stroke is fine for those already adept at lip liner application. But for novices, it can be easy to distort the line of the lip accidentally. Also, keep your mouth slightly open as you apply, since this keeps the lips closest to their natural shape. If you are trying to alter the shape of your lips-we'll tell you how later-still follow your lips' natural shape with lip liner for the preliminary application. Changing the shape will require you to build on the shape you already have.
Once you have drawn the basic shape of your lips, step away from the mirror and take a look at yourself from a distance. Taking a step baok is a good thing to do at numerous points in the process of applying makeup, since most people are not going to look at you while standing three inches from your face. Stepping back helps you keep a sense of balance and a lighter (or heavier, when needed) hand in terms of the overall impact you are creating.
The Art Of Lining Your Lips With Lip Liners:
1. Thin Lips: Outline just outside of the natural lip line with desired shade of lip liner. Avoid matte shades of lip color as they make lips look thinner. Shimmers, Ices, Diamonds, and plenty of lip Gloss make lips look fuller.
2. Uneven Lips: To balance, outline outside of the thinner half of the lip - and along the natural line of the fuller half with desired shade of lip liner.. Fill in with long lasting Lip Gloss.
3. Shapeless Lips: Create definition by drawing a cupid’s bow. Outline the top lip with desired shade of Lip Liner to emphasize the ‘m’. Outline outside of the lower lip to make it look fuller. Complete with favorite shade of lip color and Gloss.
4. Full Lips: Cover lips with Foundation to make lips look thinner. Outline lips with Lip Liner just inside of natural lip line. Use matte shades of Lip Gloss.
5.Uneven Colored Lips: Cover both lips with Blush Lip as a base. Outline lips with desired shade of Lip Liner. Apply any darker shade of Lip Gloss.
Application & Wear Tips
• Always use a freshly sharpened pencil. Dull pencils = muddy lip line.
• Start with dry, but moisturized lips. If lipstick is your last step of make-up application (after all of your foundation, mascara, etc) - then the very first thing you should do is a light coat of lip balm. This way it was have time to absorb and dry a bit before application of your liner.
• Don’t work with the very tip of the pencil. This can make your line too harsh, and too pigmented. Play with your angle of application so you are using just to the side of the top point. The finished line will look softer and a little more natural.
• Small lips? Don’t be afraid to go a little outside the lines and create the lips you weren’t born with. Just be cautious and work slowly, until you have a symmetrical pout.
• To help evenly lining the bottom lip, smile tightly with your mouth slightly ajar. This makes your lip taught and easier to see the defining line from lip to chin.
• Be sure to change your perspective. The goal of lip liner is not only to create a base for your lipstick, but to even up what mother nature didn’t. Be sure to look at your lips from different angles, lowering your head, raising your head, slightly to the side, while talking or laughing. It will help you catch unevenness that you didn’t even know was there.
• Some lipsticks stain. Watch out for anything excessively dark or with a purple base. To prevent, after creating your perfect line, fill your lips with liner to create a barrier in-between the lipstick and your skin. You can also use this trick when using a lipstick that isn’t high on the last-ability scale. It’ll help your lips seam evenly pigmented between trips to the powder room.
• Use a your neutral/natural liner even under gloss, or a sheer color. It’ll give your look subtle transformation that’ll up the VaVoom factor.
• Are you cheating voluptuous lips? Whenever you try to make your pout more full by exaggerating the lines, finish off by taking a white eyeliner and softly lining and smudging along the cupid’s bow, the peaks and valley of your upper lip. It’ll add the illusion of that natural highlight full lips posses.
