Disposable Razors
For thousands and thousands of years, people have used razors to trim or eliminate unwanted hair. As far back as the Bronze Age, people used sharp-edged tools to remove hair. These were fashioned from bronze, but over time people have tried different materials, including clamshells, flint, and even solid gold. This modern equiptment also come in various shapes and sizes, but typically the blades are made from steel. Here is a quick overview of the different kinds of razors you can choose from. With the large variety of disposable razors it can be difficult to choose the best one, whether you’re a man or a woman. In most cases, you can pick the best product simply by looking at the razor itself and reading the description on the packaging. Try to find a razor that has several blades, a moveable head, and some sort of cushion or moisturizer built into it. If you shave regularly, it can also be a good idea to look at the handle to see if the razor will be comfortable to use.
The amount of blades disposable razors have typically determine how close of a shave they will produce, and how likely they will be to cause razor burn. Unless you have extremely durable skin, or only use a razor to shave a very small portion of your body such as your upper lip, a razor with three to five blades will be best. You can look at the razor head itself to count the blades when making a purchase, although most packaging indicates how many blades that the razor has.
Once you’ve found a selection of razors with several blades, take a look at the space between the blade head and the handle. If it is all one piece, the razor typically does not have a moveable head, which can make shaving curved areas, such as the jaw or around the ankles, difficult. When the razor head and the handle are connected by a separate piece, this typically means that it will naturally move over your skin even when you go over curves or angles, giving you a closer, safer shave. If you are having a difficult time telling if the disposable razors have moveable heads, read the description of the products on the packaging.
Even the most durable skin can become irritated by disposable razors, especially if you shave regularly. For this reason, you should look for a product that has some type of cushioning around the blades or on one end of the razor head. This strip or cushion typically contains moisturizing ingredients, and helps to smooth the skin and reduce irritation directly after the razor blades have cut down the hair. Choosing disposable razors with this feature is relatively easy: if there is only plastic around the blades, it does not have a cushion. The moisturizing strip or cushion is typically a different color than the rest of the razor, and easy to spot when inspecting potential options.
In most cases, the blades, razor heads, and cushioning are the most important parts of choosing disposable razors. Despite this, for those who shave large portions of their body, or even just one area on a daily basis, looking at the handle before making a decision can be helpful. Disposable razors with a thicker, curved handle are typically more comfortable to use. Although this is not a large part of choosing this type of product, it can make the difference between an effective shaving item and a great one.
How to Buy a Disposable Razor
1. Choose a razor for designed for your gender. Many women's razors are made for the contours of the female body and include a lubricating strip for sensitive skin. Men's varieties often have additional blades and are intended for use on the face.
2. Pick a disposable razor with a long or textured handle. These give you better control when shaving to reduce nicks and cuts.
3. Consider the number of blades. Single blade razors do not perform as well as ones with multiple blades, either on the face or the body. Multiple blades offer a closer, more precise shave.
4. Look for disposable razors with pivoting heads. As you shave, the head moves to form to the curves on your body or face which ensures you don't miss any hard-to-reach hairs.
5. Buy a disposable razor with a lubricating strip if you have sensitive skin. Often made with aloe and vitamin E, these offer relief from the tugging and scrapping effects of shaving.
How to Keep A Disposable Razor Sharp
Drying your razor
• After you are done completely rinsing of your razor. Shake it a little bit to get any excess water off of the blades.
• Use a towel to dry off the blades. Do not drag your razor across the towel, but dab or blot your razor on the towel.
• You can also use a blow dryer for 10 to 15 seconds to make sure that there is no water on the blades. Do not overdue it as the heat can warp the blades if they get too hot. If your hair dryer has a cool shot button, you can use it to blow off any water without worrying about warping the blade.
Storing your Razor
• If you want to store your razor in the bathroom, it is wise to place it in an airtight plastic bag. This will keep the moisture from showering off the blades and will help prevent oxidation.
• The best option is to store your razor outside of the bathroom.
• One of the worst places to store your blade is close to the shower. This is the source of a lot of steam and splashing and will accelerate the dulling of your blades.
Rubbing Alcohol
• Placing a few drops or dipping your blade in a cup of rubbing alcohol can help remove moisture from your blades.
• The alcohol will dry quickly and will help keep the blade dry.
• An added benefit to this method is that the alcohol will kill any bacteria that is on your blades and can help prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Tips to Keep A Disposable Razor Sharp
As long as the razor blade is sharp, you do not need to dispose off your disposable razor. Follow these easy steps to keep your razor sharp so you can use it more than a few times.
1. Prepare the materials needed
In order to save your time and energy, remember to prepare all the materials you need in doing the procedure. The materials you will have to prepare include an old pair of jeans and the dull razor blade. Make sure that the razor blade is not too old as it may break easily.
2. Stretch the jeans
You will only need one side or one leg of the jeans for the procedure. Stretch it out evenly so you can easily do the procedure. You can stretch it out on a table or on the floor, depending on what comforts you the most.
3. Stroke one side of disposable razor
After stretching the jeans out, take the dull disposable razor. Hold the handle properly and stroke the material on the entire length of the jeans. Do not apply too much pressure to prevent the blade from breaking. Just use normal pressure. Stroke the disposable razor away from you and in one direction only. Do the step at least ten times but if you want it to be sharper, do it for 20 times.
4. Stroke the other side of disposable razor
It order to make it even, you must also sharpen the other side of the disposable razor using the jeans. Sharpen the other side of the blade by stroking it from the far end of the jeans towards you. Make sure that you stroke throughout the entire length of the jeans. Be careful in sharpening the other side of the razor to prevent injury since the direction of the stroking is towards you. Perform this step ten to 20 times as well.
5. Remember the following tips
Doing the procedure can surely make your disposable razor blade sharper again. However, in order to prolong its life even more, you must remember the following tips:
• Always dry your razor after use. The oxidation of the metal compound used in the material is the reason why it becomes dull and oxidation happens if the razor blade is not kept dry. You can use a blow dryer to make sure that the blade is kept dry.
• Place your dry razor blade in a plastic then place the plastic on a freezer. Make sure that there is minimal air in the plastic.
How to Clean a Disposable Razor
1. Place the razor under running water a few times while you are shaving. You want to shave two lines and then set the razor under the running water. This will remove the hair and shaving cream from the razor so the next area can be shaved properly. Make sure you flip the razor over to allow the running water to clean both sides of the razor.
2. Give the disposable razor a final rinse under the running water. Do this when you have finished shaving for the day.
3. Pour some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and give the blades a good wipe down. Don't forget to do both sides of the razor. This will clean your disposable razor and get it ready for the next time you need it.
4. Pat your disposable razor dry with a paper towel. Slide the protective cover that came with it back on the razor.
