Krill Oil - Benefits and Advantages
Krill are small prawn-like marine crustacean that belong to the Euphausia genus. A certain species, Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), is used to make krill oil, which has recently proven to be superior in nutrient content compared to fish oil in many ways. Two of the most important nutrients in krill oil are:1. Omega-3 fatty acids similar to those of fish oil
2. Phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFA), mainly phosphatidylcholine (alternatively referred to as marine lecithin)
How does it work?
Krill oil contains fatty acids similar to fish oil. These fats are thought to be beneficial fats that decrease swelling, lower cholesterol, and make blood platelets less sticky. When blood platelets are less sticky they are less likely to form clots.
Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which is the main reason it's becoming popular as a nutritional supplement. Another reason krill oil is becoming popular is because it contains an antioxidant called astaxanthin. The algae that krill eat produces the bright red pigment astaxanthin that gives krill and other crustaceans such as lobster and shrimp their reddish-pink color.
Krill oil can significantly reduce inflammation, pain, stiffness and functional impairment associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Krill oil is a rich source of unique phospholipid carriers of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as esterified astaxanthin, a carotenoid and antioxidant. Phospholipids are important in protecting membranes from free radical attack. The composition of phospholipids in krill oil appears to be optimal to offer such protection.
The unravelling of the exact mechanism of action is a multifactorial project which is still underway. The significantly dominant omega-3 to omega-6 ratio (15:1) in krill oil may partially explain the anti-inflammatory effects. The balance of polyunsaturated (essential) fatty acids in the body is critical for the maintenance of healthy cell membranes and hormone regulation.
The balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is important. When long-chain omega-6 fatty acids predominate in the phospholipids of cell membranes, the production of pro-inflammatory substances is encouraged. The presence of omega-3 fatty acids promotes the production of anti-inflammatory substances. The association between phospholipids and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids facilitates the passage of fatty acid molecules through the intestinal wall, increasing bioavailability and ultimately improving the omega-3:omega-6 ratio.
Antioxidants protect our body cells from damage from free radicals, unstable substances that are thought to contribute to certain chronic diseases. Unlike many other antioxidants, astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier, where it could theoretically protect the eye, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage.
Krill oil is used for heart disease, high levels of certain blood fats (triglycerides), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, osteoarthritis, depression, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and painful menstrual periods.
Krill Oil - Benefits and Advantages
• Anti-inflammatory properties
Krill oil taken regularly can reduce and relieve general back and joint pains, swelling, inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis. Because of low body omega 3 levels, inflammation and other diseases take place.
• Brain function and development
Choline and omega fatty acids really enhance normal brain functioning and improve cognition, memory and behavior.
• Regulation of cholesterol
Krill oil is able to reduce the bad cholesterol level by 34%. Alternatively, it increases good cholesterol by 43.5%, 10 times better than the fish oil.
• Better skin
Except improving the look and feel of your skin, krill oil reduces acne outbreaks, lessens the symptoms of psoriasis and just makes skin softer and more hydrated.
• Mental health
The proper amount of krill oil helps people suffering from mood swings, depression, mental disorders and stress.
• Decreasing PMS symptoms
This is the lack of Omega 3 acids in the body that causes severe PMS symptoms in women. The studies have found that a krill oil supplement is effective in relieving both physical and emotional problems.
• Fighting signs of aging
The antioxidants of krill oil are to improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles, strengthen nails and make thicker hair.
• Benefits for Bodybuilding
Omega 3 fatty acids have been established to be beneficial for bodybuilding because of their anabolic properties and potential to increase muscle strength. More details can be found in our “Omega 3 Benefits for Bodybuilding” article. Omega 3s also have anti-inflammatory effects which is beneficial for recovery and joint support.
• Benefits as an Antioxidant
Antioxidants are beneficial for many reasons, including potentially speeding up recovery times and improving general health.
Krill oil has also been used to improve emotional health in depressive patients and helped to aid sufferers of ADD and ADHD. Krill oil can help to treat skin diseases like psoriasis, and dermatitis. It boosts the overall health of your body, but especially benefits the heart, and brain. This supplement also increases your overall energy and vitality, and can minimize unsightly wrinkles. There is research being conducted currently that points to Krill Oil even being able to reduce the signs of cancer.
It’s better than Fish Oil
Krill is better than fish oil because it has less chance of being full of mercury and other heavy metals. The oil of krill is more sustainable than fish oil as well, offering krill oil benefits. Krill is the largest bio-mass in the world. They live in huge numbers in the Antarctic Ocean, and the World Wildlife federation and other agencies make sure that only a small percentage of the krill in the world’s oceans are harvested every year. Supposedly, the harvesting could go on for centuries before there would ever be any concern whatsoever that the environment would sustain any true impact.
